Valley Railroad Company – October 2024 Photo Charter

In October 2024, Dak Dillon Photography hosted a two-day photography excursion on the Valley Railroad Company, known as the Essex Steam Train, in Essex, Connecticut.

The event brought together 35 photographers from more than 20 states, all eager to capture fall landscapes along the Connecticut River, including some locations not commonly accessible on regular excursions.

Day 1 – Freight Train and Night Photo Session

On Tuesday, our charter featured a freight train pulled by the historic Valley Railroad 40, working north from Old Saybrook to Goodspeed Station. Departing at dawn, we took advantage of the golden morning light to capture stunning shots at various locations along the route.

From crossings framed by autumn foliage to vintage cars echoing the sights of yesteryear, the day was filled with photographic opportunities until evening.

Tuesday night included a night photography session around Essex Station and the railroad yard.

Using creative LED lighting setups, we crafted several scenes featuring Valley Railroad 40, with crew members in period attire and a 1940s Chevy pickup truck, adding authenticity to the shots. The historic station and vintage rail equipment provided the perfect backdrop for dramatic night photography.

Day 2 – Passenger Train

On Wednesday, our steam photo charter featured a passenger train pulled by Valley Railroad 97, reminiscent of steam-powered commuter trains that used to run on the Valley Railroad line.

Our day started in the railroad yard, capturing scenes as the engine was prepared for the day.

From there, we spent the day photographing the train as it steamed through tree tunnels, over bridges and alongside the Connecticut River.

The combination of classic passenger cars and the vintage locomotive provided a nostalgic experience reminiscent of the golden age of rail travel.

Vintage automobiles were featured in various scenes throughout the event, including a 1930s Packard Darrin, a 1940s Chevy pickup truck, and a 1930s Ford Cabriolet. Special thanks to Herb Clark and The Clark Group for providing the cars, along with Neil and Ralph.

Special thanks to the Valley Railroad staff and crew, whose dedication and enthusiasm helped make this event successful. Their commitment to preserving and sharing the history of the railroad greatly enhanced our experience.
