In early May 2024, Dak Dillon Photography and MPT Photography hosted a series of photo events in Pennsylvania with Railway Restoration Project 113 and Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train.
Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train
On a rainy Friday night, participants braved the elements to capture unique photos of Lehigh Valley Coal Company 123, a mine-gauge 0-4-0 tank engine. The event marked the railroad’s first hosting a photography-focused gathering.
For the event, photo runbys were staged along the rails up the mountain with unique tree tunnels, S-curves and even some mountain views. After the light of the day set, a night photo session included unique scenes in the tree tunnels and around the yard of the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train.
For the 2024 operating season, the engine was freshly painted in the Lehigh Valley Coal Company colors, replacing the “Henry Clay” name it had previously worn.

CNJ 113
Central Railroad of New Jersey 113, operated by Railway Restoration Project 113, was featured for a night photo session on Saturday. The session featured a mix of staged photos and runby opportunities for photographers.
The event utilized the Minersville Station, with some scenes featuring the coal loader.
The most unique scene of the night was staged inside the cab of CNJ 113, an ALCO 0-6-0 switcher-type steam locomotive built in 1923. The crew took turns shoveling coal into the firebox for a dramatic shot with a cigar adding that extra touch.
Proceeds from both events went directly to the respective non-profit organizations.
Special thanks to the crew and volunteers of both organizations and to Mark for his help in organizing, planning, and running the events.
